CALL FOR PROPOSALS!

LIBERATION TECHNOLOGIES : SCI-FI FOR WORLD-BUILDING & SURVIVAL at the Allied Media Conference 2014, June 19~22, 2014

This year the Sci-Fi Track has returned in the form of the Liberation Technologies track, which hopes to use SF (science/speculative fiction) as a tool in fighting oppression, and builds off past tracks and movement building, such as the Science and Social Movements track and the Octavia Butler and Emergent Strategy sessions.

The post-apocalypse is here and real, where ancient and varied cultures and technologies have been erased in the name of Empire and Progress. What do we do when access to memory/the past has been standardized, and the potential to manifest and (dis)embody the joyous unknown has been shamed and left behind?

This track seeks sci-fi and speculative themed session proposals that disrupt, deconstruct, and reframe oppressive mainstream media networks, narratives, and representation by using sci-fi possibilities to reorient existence.

Appropriate themes and activities include:
Afro-futurism, healing practices, bodies and abilities (paranormal, dis- or otherwise), storytelling, emergence, meme-making, imaginative world-building, fan-fiction, magical real[ness], DIY sci-fi, intersectionality, collective memory, speculative cities, exploding binaries, digital places/cyberspaces, redefining science/technology, technologies that are incomplete, gestural & in process, recuperation of technologies both ancient and contemporary, mythology, affect and public regulation of feeling, ∞.

We explicitly seek to welcome & center the #libtech track around:
People of color, black people, trans* people (transwomen, non-binary trans, transmen), youth, native people, fat and abundant people, surveilled people, dis-abled people, mixed people, non-people, and the communities that exist around the lot of us in all our different places and experiences.

>>> Read the FAQs for Submiting AMC Sessions here for questions about session formats more. Please send comments, and questions to our AMPtalk page or to libtechamc@gmail.com.

>>> Submit your Call for Proposals to our Google form here.

Deadline for submissions is March 1st, 2014.

Please share and reblog widely!〜♡

Some time ago we decided it would be a good idea to make a brochure for people to take at events. This was good for when people were curious about us but didn’t want to spend their hard-earned money on buying a zine.

So Eighteen designed a brochure that did the double duty of being informative and offering some basic media literacy questions. We ended up calling this section the Weapons of Perception.

What’s media literacy? It’s the ability to actively analyze and understand media messages. How do we do that? We ask some questions, that’s what.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE?
WHAT’S MISSING?
WHO MADE THIS?
HOW CAN I TELL?
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

Most of us are never told to ask questions about the movies, TV shows, songs, ads, books, news, and other media messages we encounter at all day every day. Media doesn’t grow out of the ground like a tree, it’s made by somebody! For a reason! And we should be able to figure out why and what for.

It turns out that a lot of people that think media literacy is a good idea. We thought it would be another good idea to make our brochure available for download, so you can print your own copies out.

INTRODUCING!!!!! FOR THE

THE ALLIED MEDIA CONFERENCE 2014

LIBERATION TECHNOLOGY FOR WORLD-BUILDING & SURVIVAL IN THE POST-APOCALYPSE

METROPOLARITY & WEIRDO CRYSTAL WALKER PORTAL JUMPER AFFILIATES HAVE ASSEMBLED TO CRAFT A PROGRAMING TRACK FOR THIS YEAR’S ALLIED MEDIA CONFERENCE, “A COLLABORATIVE LABORATORY OF MEDIA-BASED ORGANIZING STRATEGIES FOR TRANSFORMING OUR WORLD, HELD EVERY SUMMER IN DETROIT.” IF YOU READ THIS AND GET EXCITED IN THE LEAST, CONSIDER SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL TO OUR TRACK. EVEN IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT LOOKS OR FEELS OR SOUNDS LIKE, HOLLER AT US. WE WANT TO BUILD W/YOU.

The post-apocalypse is here and real, where ancient and varied modes of survival and technology have been erased in the name of Empire and Progress. What do we do when access to memory/the past is standardized? This track explores how people at the margins can remix, rewire, and revive emancipatory technologies such as storytelling, world-building, magic, sci-fi and speculation to envision and conjure narratives of power and joy. Through engagement with tools like portals and time-travel, we will develop strategies to manifest new/ancient narratives into reality. We will envision a world that has happened, is happening, and will happen. We hope that travelers will walk away with the courage to embody the power of fiction and visioning in healing personal and historical trauma and disenfranchisement. We want to create and share multifaceted inclusive networks that emerge our bodies from isolation and oppressive paradigms to keep our souls alive.

The Liberation Tech track seeks cyborgs, griots, world-makers, hackers, healers, dreammakers, extraterrestrials, time-travelers, mystics and non-specifics to help create a journey into sci-fi, magic, and speculation. We seek workshops and skill shares that challenge our ideas of reality, time, language, science, and technology. Appropriate themes and activities include: Afro-futurism, healing practices, abilities (paranormal, dis- or otherwise), storytelling, meme-making, world-building, fan-fiction, magical real[ness], DIY sci-fi, intersectionality, collective memory, speculative cities, exploding binaries, redefining science/technology, mythology,∞

One of these days we’re going to have enough time out of our day jobs and personal projects and group organizing efforts to write some beefy articles up on this chumpie, but until then we’re going to keep updating you with media from our efforts in the meatspace.

Here’s a bit of backlog coverage from two events, The Apiary Corp & The Dream Oven‘s Come As Your Madness smut reading in September 2013, and the 11th annual Philly Zine Fest in October 2013

Ras Mashramani readily reads a bunch of filth at Little Berlin in the world’s best ambivalent dial-up monotone (this is one of the multitude of reasons she is loved).

Jump ahead a month and here she is reading a piece about cyberspace adolesence and chatroom survival called The Nightspace at Philly Zine Fest 2013 At the Rotunda, October 12th, 2013

R.Phillips (also of the Afrofuturist Affair) reads from Literary Social Vision & Building Benevolent Institutions Part 1 at the same fest. If you like hard SF, do yourself a favor and get turned on here.

“Like newborns to an umbilical cord we remain tethered to institutions all our lives.”

Then she follows up, reading the excerpt “Zero Point” from the tentatively titled Slice Convergence and Non-Local Spaces. She read this at the last Laser Life and everybody’s head exploded (then reassembled by reversing the thermodynamic flow of time)

Don’t miss us. We regularly post about our upcoming events here in our Events Calendar, and more readily at our Surveillance Facebook page.

And feel free to invite us out too 😉
