Visionary Literature

May 17, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We know the literary world is not immune to the racism and inequality all around us. And we know we can do better. This reading and panel discussion will explore how two small, independent presses in Philadelphia are exploring issues of race, gender, literature, and a better future.

Rasheedah Phillips of The AfroFuturist Affair /House of Future Sciences Books will present her book, Reccurence Plot (and Other Time Travel Tales), an independently-published novel set in Philly that uses time travel to explore issues of race, gender, trauma, and agency.

Author Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela of Thread Makes Blanket Press will be presenting Dismantle, a contemporary collection of work from the VONA/Voices Writing Workshop, a national workshop that nurtures writers of color. She will be joined by Andrea Walls, one of Dismantle’s editors, and Seve Torres, one of the writers included in the anthology.

Join us for a short reading and a discussion about new visions for literature today and into the future, and to celebrate the release of these two new books.
