SUMMARY:Future Perfect: A screening & workshop exploring future imaginaries from the New Right to the AfroFuturist Affair
DESCRIPTION:Slought is pleased to announce “Future Perfect\,” a screening and workshop exploring future imaginaries from the New Right to the AfroFuturist Affair\, on Tuesday\, November 3\, 2015 from 6-8pm. The event will feature the Philadelphia premiere of Daniel Tucker’s feature-length video essay Future Perfect: Time Capsules in Reagan Country (54 minutes\, 2015)\, followed by a dialogue between the artist and author Rasheedah Phillips\, creator of The AfroFuturist Affair\, exploring the liberatory potential of language\, and the relationship of writing to social justice and alternative conceptions of the future. \nThe conversation at Slought takes place just over ten years after Ronald Reagan’s death\, and twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and his departure from the office of the President of the United States. It will begin with an exploration of a speech delivered by former President Ronald Reagan following the end of his Governorship in California on August 19th\, 1976 at the Republican National Convention in Kansas City\, Missouri. In this speech\, Reagan talks of the difficulty he found in writing a letter for a time capsule to be sealed in Los Angeles and opened one hundred years in the future. The video essay Future Perfect: Time Capsules in Reagan Country revisits this historical moment\, as well as Reagan’s future imaginaries – his science fiction imagination and rhetoric – through visits to Reagan-inspired monuments and time capsules throughout California. \nThe conversation at Slought will then move from the New Right imaginary of Reagan’s era\, which sought to impose a conservative vision upon society\, to the AfroFuturist imaginary of Black speculative fiction writers today\, who seek to enable a more progressive vision for society. In their recent collection Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements (2015)\, editors Adrienne Maree Brown and Walidah Imarisha introduce the term visionary fiction to distinguish “science fiction that has relevance toward building new\, freer worlds from the mainstream strain of science fiction\, which most often reinforces dominant narratives of power.” The event will thus explore the power of language in envisioning better worlds\, and the relationship between language\, identity\, imagination and power. The evening will conclude with a short writing workshop led by Rasheedah Phillips and The AfroFuturist Affair.

SUMMARY:AFROFUTURES_UK Conference & Exhibition Weekend
DESCRIPTION:AfroFutures_UK is a weekend event celebrating the intersection of futurism and the black experience. Featuring artists\, academics\, and activists\, they aim to promote Afrofuturistic endeavours in the arts and technology. Metropolarity’s own Rasheedah Phillips\, founder of the AfroFuturist Affair and Black Quantum Futurism collective\, will be there as one of several excellent guest speakers. \n\nAfroFutures_UK is a new collective made up of artists\, writers\, activists and academics interested in exploring the future black experience through multi-media and disruptive technologies. \nOur seminal event is a Conference//Exhibition where we will be using themes and inspiration from Afrofuturism to probe and dissect our visions of the future\, from the sociological to the scientific. We aim to bring together a range of theoretical discourse that touch on this aspect\, from womanism/black feminism\, queer theory to liberation theology and afrocentric philosophy. \nThere will be a series of talks during the day as well as film screenings\, performances and practical workshops. The current list of confirmed speakers and workshop leaders can be found here. You can follow us on Twitter @AfroFutures_UK

SUMMARY:Ferguson is the Future Symposium: Speculative Arts & Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:“Ferguson is the Future”:\nIncubating Alternative Worlds Through Arts\, Activism\, and Scholarship \nWhat stories about power\, difference\, and belonging fuel the social crises we face today? How does visionary fiction offer us models for creating new possible worlds? Can the combined insights and interventions of artists\, activists\, and scholars plot a different course forward? “Ferguson is the Future” is part of an ongoing collaboration to imagine and create alternative worlds that are more just and representative of humanity. \nThis symposium brings together a multigenerational panel of speculative fiction writers\, activists\, filmmakers\, academics\, and artists to discuss the historical\, present-and-future manifestations of a social reality we wish to create and thrive in. As we work to shape change\, we will use this space as an incubator and laboratory to grow new visions of the worlds we want to exist. Please join us for a day-long celebration and investigation to explore these timely issues. \nMajor support for the symposium was provided by a grant of the David A. Gardner ’69 Magic Project in the Council of the Humanities and a grant of the Lewis Center for the Arts. \nAdditional Sponsors:\nOctavia E. Butler Legacy Network\, Princeton Public Library\, Princeton Department of English\, Princeton Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies\, and Princeton Department of African American Studies. \nA LIVESTREAM FROM THIS EVENT CAN BE WATCHED HERE \n\nCO-ORGANIZERS\nMOYA BAILEY\nRUHA BENJAMIN\nAYANA A. SUMMARY:RITUAL CAUSALITY 001
DESCRIPTION:Black Quantum Futurism presents its first 2-hour gallery performance RITUAL CAUSALITY 001 featuring ancient anthropological finds\, African/Black Diasporic time and memory rituals\, and live sound experiments. Experience BQF theorists discovering the first computer in 100bc\, lecturing on Sun Ra synchronicities\, and Quantum Mapping our collective futures. RITUAL CAUSALITY 001 is a retrocausal retrospective starting with the latest BQF work\, ANTI-KY-THE/RA\, then spiraling backwards to the beginning with the NonLocality series. BQF’s first exhibition of works will be a multimedia experience that will include dance\, sound\, projections and speculative literary performances. \nBlack Quantum Futurism is inspired by afrofuturism\, quantum physics\, and African traditions of spatial-temporal consciousness. BQF weaves speculative reality with ritual\, image and sound to present innovative works that offer practical techniques for escaping time loops\, oppression vortexes\, and the digital matrix. \nBQF Collective is an artistic and literary collaboration between Camae Defstar (Rockers!; MMGZ) and Rasheedah Phillips (The AfroFuturist Affair; Metropolarity) which explores the intersections of futurism\, literature\, art\, sound\, creative media\, DIY-aesthetics\, and activism in marginalized communities. Forming in Summer 2014\, the collective has created a number of community-based events\, experimental music project\, several zines\, and an anthology of experimental essays called “Black Quantum Futurism: Theory & Practice Vol. 1\,” which includes visions from other futurist writers and visionaries. www.blackquantumfuturism.tumblr.com /www.blackquantumfuturism.bandcamp.com \nDay #3 Rockers Bbq Weekend #RBW5\n$7-10 requested donation\nCash bar\nLight refreshments\nZines/books/art for sale \nThis event is apart of Rockers BBQ Weekend #RBW5 A 3 day diy festival based in Philadelphia showcasing marginalized artists and artist that create work that speaks out against injustice. \nDAY #1 – AUGUST 14TH – ATONEMENT / ATUNEMENT – THE ART CHURCH\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1112257575456155/ \nDAY #2 – AUGUST 15TH – ROCKERS – LAVA SPACE\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/410789349104259/

SUMMARY:2014 Allied Media Conference in Detroit
DESCRIPTION:Join Metropolarity & network at this year’s The Allied Media Conference\, a collaborative laboratory of media-based organizing strategies for transforming our world\, held every Summer in Detroit! \nDID U KNOW? METROPOLARITY PRESENTS A SCI-FI FOCUSED PROGRAMMING TRACK THIS YEAR! \nLiberation Technologies: Sci-Fi for World Building & Survival\nThe post-apocalypse is here and real\, where ancient and varied modes of survival and technology have been erased in the name of Empire and Progress. What do we do when access to memory/the past is standardized? This track explores how people at the margins can remix\, rewire\, and revive emancipatory technologies such as storytelling\, world-building\, magic\, sci-fi and speculation to envision and conjure narratives of power and joy. Through engagement with tools like portals and time-travel\, we will develop strategies to manifest new/ancient narratives into reality. We will envision a world that has happened\, is happening\, and will happen. We hope that travelers will walk away with the courage to embody the power of fiction and visioning in healing personal and historical trauma and disenfranchisement. We want to create and share multifaceted inclusive networks that emerge our bodies from isolation and oppressive paradigms to keep our souls alive. \n==================================== \nABOUT THE AMC\nCREATE\nAt the AMC\, we understand media as any way in which we communicate with the world\, from zines to breakdancing\, to designing neighborhood-based communications infrastructure. We share and create media that exposes\, investigates\, heals\, builds confidence and radical hope\, incites dialogue and debate. We demystify technology\, not only learning how to use it\, but how to design and build our own. In doing so\, we redefine technology’s role and impact in our lives. The AMC creates learning environments for all ages and skill levels\, including hands-on workshops\, strategy sessions\, presentations and performances. \nCONNECT\n The AMC is a network of networks – social justice organizers\, community technologists\, transformative artists\, educators\, entrepreneurs\, and many others — all using media in innovative ways. Some of these networks sprout from the conference\, grow over the course of the year then reconvene in Detroit larger and healthier. Others use the AMC as an annual point of convergence and a space to forge new relationships. Through cycles of participatory investigation and experimentation\, our networks continue to grow\, generating new theories and practices of media-based organizing. \nTRANSFORM\nAs our networks grow\, so does our capacity to take collective actions to transform our world. At the AMC\, we develop new leaders and new forms of leadership\, design new methods of problem-solving\, cultivate the visions of our communities and build our power to make those visions real. \n==================================== \nBrowse the 2014 Tracks\, Practice Spaces\, and Network Gatherings that make up the AMC here! \n==================================== \nREGISTER TO ATTEND! ／／／　FIND HOUSING\, RIDESHARES\, CHILDCARE & ACCESSIBILITY HERE \n==================================== \nAllied Media Projects Network Principles\nWe are making an honest attempt to solve the most significant problems of our day. \nWe are building a network of people and organizations that are developing long-term solutions based on the immediate confrontation of our most pressing problems. \nWherever there is a problem\, there are already people acting on the problem in some fashion. Understanding those actions is the starting point for developing effective strategies to resolve the problem\, so we focus on the solutions\, not the problems. \nWe emphasize our own power and legitimacy. \nWe presume our power\, not our powerlessness. \nWe spend more time building than attacking. \nWe focus on strategies rather than issues. \nThe strongest solutions happen through the process\, not in a moment at the end of the process. \nThe most effective strategies for us are the ones that work in situations of scarce resources and intersecting systems of oppression because those solutions tend to be the most holistic and sustainable. \nPlace is important. For the AMC\, Detroit is important as a source of innovative\, collaborative\, low-resource solutions. Detroit gives the conference a sense of place\, just as each of the conference participants bring their own sense of place with them to the conference. \nWe encourage people to engage with their whole selves\, not just with one part of their identity. \nWe begin by listening.

SUMMARY:The Future Weird x The AfroFuturist Affair Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:The Future Weird short film screening series out of Brooklyn joins The AfroFuturist Affair in Philly for an evening of sci-fi\, experimental\, speculative & weird short films by directors from Africa and the Global South\, with live\, thematic musical interludes from experimental/electronic artists Marlo Reynolds and Moor Mother Goddess. \nJoin us on Saturday\, May 10 to screen two of The Future Weird’s curated tracks\, VISIONS OF EXCESS and IN SEARCH OF A BLACK ATLANTIS. \nVISIONS OF EXCESS features short films which document bodies produced by force. We study body movement which confounds the dichotomy between human and machine. But forget what you know about the sexy cyborg – we’re talking about discipline\, ritual\, secret societies run by women\, the appetites of deep sea creatures\, eroticized amputees\, and militant bread bakers. Welcome to the black fantastic. \nfeaturing a thematic performance by Moor Mother Goddess \nIn IN SEARCH OF A BLACK ATLANTIS\, water is a cleansing force through which our bodies may be reborn\, but it is also a site of memory where disappeared and suppressed things resurface\, wash up\, or return to us as detritus. Through myths that traverse the Black diaspora we meet a beautiful and dangerous sea goddess named mama wata. Following tourists and then refugees fleeing Europe\, we consider stories concerning identity\, slavery and commerce\, high seas adventure\, and the joint appeal and terror of being visited by ancestors or haunted by an unknown past. \nfeaturing a thematic performance by Marlo Reynolds \nWhen: Saturday\, May 10\, 2014\nWhere: LAVA Space\, 4134 Lancaster Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19104\nTime: 4-9pm\, with thematic musical interludes\nCost: $5 donation\, no one turned away for lack of funds\nSnacks \nSponsored by:\nPhiladelphia Printworks\, GriotWorks\, The Future Weird\, and The AfroFuturist Affair

SUMMARY:The AfroFuturist Affair 3rd Annual Costume & Charity Ball
DESCRIPTION:The AfroFuturist Affair is throwing our 3rd Annual Charity & Costume Ball: Dark Phase Space on November 9\, 2013 at MythMedia Studios in Philadelphia! At the annual Ball we celebrate and bring awareness to AfroFuturistic culture with feature artists\, authors\, and performers who will present works and creations that use Afrofuturism and Sci-Fi as vehicles for expression\, education\, agency\, and liberation. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Futurist Fund\, a community grant dedicated to serving the needs of an underserved or marginalized member of the community. \nWe need your support to throw the Ball and fund our community grant!\n\nThe AfroFuturist Affair is a community formed in Philadelphia in 2011 to celebrate\, strengthen\, and promote Afrofuturistic and Black sci-fi culture through creative events\, community workshops\, blogging\, and creative writing. All proceeds from our events are used to fund the Futurist Fund Community Grant. The AfroFuturist Affair is also a founding member of Metropolarity.net\, a 215 Speculative Fiction Collective.\n\nThe Futurist Fund is a community\, need-based grant established to provide a small amount of financial assistance to those in the community with an immediate and demonstrated need\, and without other available funds or resources to meet that need. The Futurist Fund grant is awarded by The AfroFuturist Affair each year\, with grant funds raised from non-tax deductible donations made through creative Afrofuturistic events held year round by the organization and other collaborative partners. \nSince we started giving out the grant in November 2012\, we have assisted a mother with past due bills after tragic deaths in the family\, a young mother with severe health issues\, and an individual in need of assistance with moving costs. We have also used the funds to provide sponsorship and community partnerships to a number of community events\, including Psychic Windows Gallery with artist Joshua Mays at Sanctuary Wholistic Arts\, the Philly Premiere of The Triptych with AfroPunk and MythMedia Studios\, and Rockers! 3rd Annual BBQ Weekend. \nThe Annual Ball provides a platform for artists\, authors\, musicians\, visionaries\, and performers of color who purposely create with science fiction and afrofuturistic themes and mediums. Artists who feature at the AfroFuturist Affair Carity & Costume Ball are diverse in their theories\, topics\, and modes of expression\, but all of their work embody common afrofuturistic elements – paying homage to our histories\, commenting on our present state\, and envisioning our futures as people of color. Some of our past guests and sponsors have included: \n \nDja Dja N. Medjay\, author of the science fiction novel\, Renpet \nBill Campbell \, author of Sunshine Patriots and Koontown Killing Kaper \nNicole D. Sconiers\, author of a collection of speculative fiction short stories\, Escape from Beckyville: Tales of Race\, Hair\, and Rage \nNapoleon Dolemite and the Signifying Monks \n \nVisual Artist Lorna Williams \nIntuitive Expressions \nPSL Presidential Candidate of the US Peta Lindsay \nArtists Rell Stylez of S.W.A.G \nDesigner Nit Ra Sit \nDJ John Morrison The Alien Architect \n \nPhiladelphia Printworks feyasterling inc. The Black Tribbles \nBlack Sci-Fi.com \nBlu Dahlia \n \n \nFunds also help to support other activities and endeavors of the organization\, including our tumblr blog which promotes and supports Afrofuturistic culture\, practice\, and events around the diaspora\, our free community workshops\, and critical\, creative writing on Black scifi and Afrofuturistic phenomenon. \nYou can see photos from our past Balls from 2011 and 2012. \nHere is an interview with the Creative Director of The AfroFuturist Affair at a promotional event from the very first Ball in 2011: \n \nOther Ways You Can Help \n \nAll donations are greatly\nappreciated\, but we understand that not everyone has the means to monetarily support. Your support by sharing this campaign on your social networking\nsites is truly invaluable! We will also try to set up some sort of digital gift\nfor most shares\, such as a .pdf of The AfroFuturist Affair mini-zine. \nIf you are interested in sponsoring\, vending\, or volunteering at the 2013 Charity & Costume Ball\, please submit an email to afrofuturistaffair@gmail.com. To share your ideas\, talents\, and proposed performances for inclusion in this year’s Charity & Costume Ball\, please email afrofuturistaffair@gmail.com by September 30\, 2013. \n \nMore About The AfroFuturist Affair \n \nThe AfroFuturist Affair engages the community by cultivating a vehicle through which people can push beyond the confines of the mainstream narratives and stereotypes that have marginalized their interests\, experiences\, and their very existences and allows them to continue developing their identities in a comfortable and safe space with people of like minds. The project also provides a space for individuals of color with similar experiences and interests in Afrofuturism\, fantasy\, science-fiction\, and speculative fiction to collaborate on a project that promotes and encourages their art and philosophies as connected with these themes. In the sense that Afrofuturism and speculative fiction is a medium for social commentary and a lens through which communities can shape evaluate or shape their futures\, the project provides the space not only for further dialogue around these ideas\, but for actual\, practical implementation of these ideas as they serve social progress.
