SUMMARY:2014 Philly Literary Family Reunion & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:VIA OUR FRIENDS\, APIARY MAGAZINE\nUs Philly poets and writers are lucky to have a beautiful & eccentric extended literary family. Over the last 5 years\, APIARY’s met many newfound brothers and sisters\, weirdo cousins\, inspiring aunties and uncles\, adorable nieces and nephews\, and wise grands. After a busy spring\, it’s time to catch up with everyone! \nSo on June 8\, we’re throwing the first annual Philly Literary Family Reunion in Clark Park. No planned readings\, no speeches\, no bios. Just a grill & music & any Philly poet\, writer\, and reader who considers themselves fam. \nBring food or drink (it’s a public park\, and there will be folks of all ages\, so booze just needs to be non-visible and lowkey … don’t want it to be THAT kind of family reunion…). If you like\, one of your chapbooks\, CDs\, etc to swap. And bring your family\, too! \nSee you soon. Love\, \nAPIARY

SUMMARY:2014 Allied Media Conference in Detroit
DESCRIPTION:Join Metropolarity & network at this year’s The Allied Media Conference\, a collaborative laboratory of media-based organizing strategies for transforming our world\, held every Summer in Detroit! \nDID U KNOW? METROPOLARITY PRESENTS A SCI-FI FOCUSED PROGRAMMING TRACK THIS YEAR! \nLiberation Technologies: Sci-Fi for World Building & Survival\nThe post-apocalypse is here and real\, where ancient and varied modes of survival and technology have been erased in the name of Empire and Progress. What do we do when access to memory/the past is standardized? This track explores how people at the margins can remix\, rewire\, and revive emancipatory technologies such as storytelling\, world-building\, magic\, sci-fi and speculation to envision and conjure narratives of power and joy. Through engagement with tools like portals and time-travel\, we will develop strategies to manifest new/ancient narratives into reality. We will envision a world that has happened\, is happening\, and will happen. We hope that travelers will walk away with the courage to embody the power of fiction and visioning in healing personal and historical trauma and disenfranchisement. We want to create and share multifaceted inclusive networks that emerge our bodies from isolation and oppressive paradigms to keep our souls alive. \n==================================== \nABOUT THE AMC\nCREATE\nAt the AMC\, we understand media as any way in which we communicate with the world\, from zines to breakdancing\, to designing neighborhood-based communications infrastructure. We share and create media that exposes\, investigates\, heals\, builds confidence and radical hope\, incites dialogue and debate. We demystify technology\, not only learning how to use it\, but how to design and build our own. In doing so\, we redefine technology’s role and impact in our lives. The AMC creates learning environments for all ages and skill levels\, including hands-on workshops\, strategy sessions\, presentations and performances. \nCONNECT\n The AMC is a network of networks – social justice organizers\, community technologists\, transformative artists\, educators\, entrepreneurs\, and many others — all using media in innovative ways. Some of these networks sprout from the conference\, grow over the course of the year then reconvene in Detroit larger and healthier. Others use the AMC as an annual point of convergence and a space to forge new relationships. Through cycles of participatory investigation and experimentation\, our networks continue to grow\, generating new theories and practices of media-based organizing. \nTRANSFORM\nAs our networks grow\, so does our capacity to take collective actions to transform our world. At the AMC\, we develop new leaders and new forms of leadership\, design new methods of problem-solving\, cultivate the visions of our communities and build our power to make those visions real. \n==================================== \nBrowse the 2014 Tracks\, Practice Spaces\, and Network Gatherings that make up the AMC here! \n==================================== \nREGISTER TO ATTEND! ／／／　FIND HOUSING\, RIDESHARES\, CHILDCARE & ACCESSIBILITY HERE \n==================================== \nAllied Media Projects Network Principles\nWe are making an honest attempt to solve the most significant problems of our day. \nWe are building a network of people and organizations that are developing long-term solutions based on the immediate confrontation of our most pressing problems. \nWherever there is a problem\, there are already people acting on the problem in some fashion. Understanding those actions is the starting point for developing effective strategies to resolve the problem\, so we focus on the solutions\, not the problems. \nWe emphasize our own power and legitimacy. \nWe presume our power\, not our powerlessness. \nWe spend more time building than attacking. \nWe focus on strategies rather than issues. \nThe strongest solutions happen through the process\, not in a moment at the end of the process. \nThe most effective strategies for us are the ones that work in situations of scarce resources and intersecting systems of oppression because those solutions tend to be the most holistic and sustainable. \nPlace is important. For the AMC\, Detroit is important as a source of innovative\, collaborative\, low-resource solutions. Detroit gives the conference a sense of place\, just as each of the conference participants bring their own sense of place with them to the conference. \nWe encourage people to engage with their whole selves\, not just with one part of their identity. \nWe begin by listening.

SUMMARY:CANARIES group show at Cleopatra's w/Maggie Eighteen
DESCRIPTION:Canaries is a support group of women artists in New York City living and working with autoimmune conditions. Together they navigate the misconceptions around autoimmunity and the rising autoimmune epidemic. Through their conversations and work\, the Canaries confront the epistemological shortcomings of a culture that insists on the duality of mind and body. Moving between the realm of the healthy and the realm of the sick\, they seek to carve out a new site from which to understand identity formation in today’s world.\nCleopatra’s is pleased to present Canaries\, a multimedia group exhibition that investigates healing\, survival and the scarcity of language around these issues. \nFEATURING THE CANARIES\nJesse Cohen\, Marley Freeman\, Christine Kelly\, Carolyn Lazard\, Molly Lowe\, Victoria Vreeland\, Rebecca Watson Horn\n\nWITH PRESENTATIONS BY\nDanyel M Ferrari\, Saralee Gallien and Roxanne Baker\, Maggie Eighteen \nOpening\, November 16\, 5:00 – 7:00PM\nNovember 17 – December 22\, 2014\nThe schedule of events will be updated often on their website: http://cleopatras.us\n \n\nCanaries\n\n“When we speak of the outside\, we are considering only half of the whole”\n-Jung.\, Memories\, Dreams\, Reflections

Because they lived in times where the voice of the oppressed (queer black and brown bodies; don’t trip) was muffled\, cataloged and ultimately erased\, where their lives were scrutinized\, their skin and bodies criminalized and made alien\, where their stories\, long forgotten\, were stolen and then retold and repackaged by interlopers\, then sold back to them under the well-worn veil of diversity hashtags\, the cosmonauts of Metropolarity geared up on a mission to shift the paradigm of their world\, not to change it\, but to right it’s course. \nThis is what happened. SUMMARY:THE LASER LIFE: QUEER SF READING SERIES RETURNS
DESCRIPTION:OUR CHURCH CONGREGATES AGAIN. \nLASER LIFE. A queer sci-fi reading. \nEverything examined is possible. Everything in the universe\, from the widely posted to the under served\, belongs here\, in the forefront of consciousness and being. Every particle\, every node\, every ion that pulses and vibrates throughout the eternal void\, it all has a voice\, is real. \nThere are no mistakes in characterization; there are no budding accidents or effortless imaginations. All things scribed and etched in parchment are the divine edicts of their authors\, influenced by the shifting winds of the zeitgeist of the world the scribe inhabits\, and is informed by the pulse body-mind electric elective mandate. \nDespite the insistence of the dominant paradigm that elects to leave us voiceless\, facing the peripatetic void\, there is still a way. We can still choose our own adventure\, we can still choose our own narrative. We can live life on the narrowest edge of a beam of light. We can live in the crevices of the universe where dark matter subsists\, arcing over singularities where exploding nebulae enmesh with wild-born comets\, streaking through the opaque nothing/everywhere to burst as chroma on a graf tagged wall. We can live life like a laser. \nSo understand: All is real. The choices you make of the creatures you give life to\, all wiry gnarl of angst\, all bulbous and disheveled wad of messy coagulate\, all sinewy stretched meat of universe stuff– they’re all also real and exist here with us in the “real world” forever. Will they strive for their own happiness? Will their own arcs be catapulted into an unfettered birth? Will their joy and pain serve as real\, palpable\, and conscientious? Or will they wither and die\, lay flat on the page as husks\, merely cannon fodder for the oppressing class\, to die a death as a strangled trope loosed of the juiced of life? \nThe LASER LIFE series of readings is designed to expose the quantumly quantative\, psycho-spiritual\, panoramic truth of the speculative\, to make real the shaman’s holler\, the mystic’s clamour\, the soothsayer’s griot-speak– all that was falsely remembered as unreal. Laser Life is a tour beyond the stilted cis-hetero-white-male gaze of normative “science fiction” that plagues the shelves of your local bookstore and Goodreads “to read” lists. It is hoped that Laser Life does not serve as tokenistic or anomalous within the ranks of science fiction\, but that the inclusion of our marginalized voices be viewed as not only empowering\, necessary or revolutionary\, but as intrinsic. \nLaser Life is everything\, and everything in its place: the nook of all that is possible for us to view: the whole of the universe. \nSo now it is up to you to write this way. \nyour guides:\nSHANE JENKINS\n\nRAS MASHRAMANI\n\nRASHEEDAH PHILLIPS\n\nMAGGIE EIGHTEEN\n \nyour guests:\nMAMI WATU\nJOEL NICHOLS\nAZEEM NPC \nya’ll know how we do

SUMMARY:Metropolarity at Swarthmore's Queer & Trans Conference
DESCRIPTION:Eyy catch us up at Swarthmore as featured guests of Swarthmore’s Queer and Trans Conference. \n Swarthmore College’s annual Queer and Trans Conference (QTC) is a student-run\, free\, and public conference that explores critical topics of queer and trans thinking\, playing\, working\, organizing\, and living. The planning committee is a group of students committed to radical queer and trans community building and justice. Each year we invite a group of activists\, scholars\, and artists to join queer and trans students\, faculty\, and staff and their friends from Swarthmore College\, nearby schools\, and the greater Philadelphia area for a weekend of learning\, discussion\, and performance around a theme relevant to the histories and lives of our communities. We invite a diverse group of presenters who will help us to re-center queer and trans discourse around voices and perspectives marginalized by mainstream gay rights movements. Our conference spotlights the fabulous work of queer and trans people of color\, people with dis/abilities\, indigenous\, poor\, and (im)migrant people. When possible\, we bring individuals and groups who live and work locally and those who are structurally denied access to resources available to us at Swarthmore. \nIn past years\, conferences and symposiums have explored sexual politics of the bedroom\, boardroom\, and classroom; queer media; queer coalition building; the intersections of race\, religion\, and gender; queer and trans activism; debates around same-sex marriage; and queer families and homes. This year’s conference\, “Resisting Violence\, Building Queer Safety\,” seeks to address and begin conversations about safety in queer and trans communities.

SUMMARY:CHROME CITY 2: No\, New York
DESCRIPTION:a prep and a primer\, re: CHROME CITY. From the Files of Lexcorp.. CC’d Weyland-Yutani\, Cyberdyne Systems\, Ltd.\, Tyrell Corporation\, LLC. \nChrome City in general is an attempt to create new forms of art from the ethereal husks\, the ozone laced residue of the retro-future\, and to stitch new works\, new possibilities from the light lines streaking off time warping deloreans. It’s not just a “retro party”; the intention is to create something new while acknowledging everything that made us who we are.\nChrome City 2: No\, New York\, is both a conscious effort to vibrate away from the stagnancy of relying on Big Brother to validate us (in more ways than one\, this time specifically New York City and it’s relationship to Philly\, as well as in an Orwellian sense–see what i did there?) So\, we’re saying “NO” to New York\, but we’re also bigging up; we can’t front: the pre-Guiliani graffiti scrawl of a gang ridden late ’70s and ’80s NYC is ultimately enticing. Besides\, “No New York” is the name of a seminal no wave compilation that informs much of the underground today. But aside from a raw play on words\, we’re looking to bridge the ever widening gap of the forward movements that took place downtown from 1977 to 1984– go-go boys\, voguers\, bboys\, art fags\, drag queens all clash with the mandroids\, bio-morphs\, replikants and blade runners alike– to the post internet everything world of today. Is it possible to simultaneously dis something and pay homage to it? Pour in those 1.21 gigawatts of ill base\, no wave noise\, and insurrectionist afterfuture cyber speak\, then hop in the delorean and find out. \n1love \nNo bands. \nSWARM\n***emissary work\, elegaic work ship*** \nPINK WASH\n***tachyon tactile technician\, tetrazoid program*** \nXXXTIAN BEAUTY\n***electric riot control\, banjee intellect \, hardwire woke work** \nNo djs. \nNOLITA SELECTOR\nJOHN MORRISON\n***control room plus*** \nPANOPTIC NERVE\n***synesthetic sorcery\, sun sun eye control*** \nNo hosts. \nICON EBONY FIERCE\nALEXOTERIC \nNo guides.\nMETROPOLARITY
