SUMMARY:CANARIES group show at Cleopatra's w/Maggie Eighteen
DESCRIPTION:Canaries is a support group of women artists in New York City living and working with autoimmune conditions. Together they navigate the misconceptions around autoimmunity and the rising autoimmune epidemic. Through their conversations and work\, the Canaries confront the epistemological shortcomings of a culture that insists on the duality of mind and body. Moving between the realm of the healthy and the realm of the sick\, they seek to carve out a new site from which to understand identity formation in today’s world.\nCleopatra’s is pleased to present Canaries\, a multimedia group exhibition that investigates healing\, survival and the scarcity of language around these issues. \nFEATURING THE CANARIES\nJesse Cohen\, Marley Freeman\, Christine Kelly\, Carolyn Lazard\, Molly Lowe\, Victoria Vreeland\, Rebecca Watson Horn\n\nWITH PRESENTATIONS BY\nDanyel M Ferrari\, Saralee Gallien and Roxanne Baker\, Maggie Eighteen \nOpening\, November 16\, 5:00 – 7:00PM\nNovember 17 – December 22\, 2014\nThe schedule of events will be updated often on their website: http://cleopatras.us\n \n\nCanaries\n\n“When we speak of the outside\, we are considering only half of the whole”\n-Jung.\, Memories\, Dreams\, Reflections

SUMMARY:Anthony Romero x Metropolarity present ERASURE
DESCRIPTION:4th AUX Curatorial Fellow Anthony Romero and Metropolarity present “Erasures.” \n We are honored to have Metropolarity join us for an evening of sci-fi dreaming\, scheming\, and reading. \n Event: Metropolarity “Erasures”\n Start: January 31\, 2015 7:00 pm\n End: January 31\, 2015 10:00 pm\n Cost: FREE\n Venue: AUX\n Phone: 215-238-1236\n Address: 319 N 11th Street\, Third Floor\, Philadelphia\, PA\, 19107 \nwhat is “erasure”? \nfirst\, understand–your navigators: \nRas Masramani\n**a vessel\, a vast and veiny husk calcified in the rigorous vacuum of space\, pulverized into turbid canals that pulsed star juice through galaxies\, lands on a reef or at the obfuscated gate of a casino or social security office or the alien terrain of near africa. \n\nMaggie Eighteen\n**elastic silicone bands stretch over bones\, attaching filamentous fibers to sinewy muscle. fire wire snakes through peripatetic systems while nanite swarms swim upstream through corroded\, murky bone marrow. \nHome \n \nRasheedah Phillips\n**pilot weary with exploding artery coalesces from temporal residue\, from chronal ephemera stretched through portals\, diving through a wormhole pricked by errant light\, birthed through a cone\, surveyor solidified.\nwww.afrofuturistaffair.com \nAlex Smith\n**mythmaker with sudden sentience\, emerges from the proud licks of the swamp\, brandishing sick sigils and taking flight\, the leaked last light of the lamp of the universe\, a goddess in kevlar and neoprene\, strafing the skies and embedded in our god pining hearts\, in the stratosphere\nhttp://theafterv3rse.tumblr.com/ \nall of this we have forgotten\, all of this was erased. \nOn January 31\, 2015\, Metropolarity\, a mercurial band of radical sci-fi architects and tantric electroglpyhs\, together\, with Anthony Romero\, avant-activist and advanced idea technopilot\, embarked on a mystical journey through time\, space\, and the biosphere to retrieve the stolen memories\, the lost idea spark of the known universe. Because they lived in times where the voice of the oppressed (queer black and brown bodies; don’t trip) was muffled\, cataloged and ultimately erased\, where their lives were scrutinized\, their skin and bodies criminalized and made alien\, where their stories\, long forgotten\, were stolen and then retold and repackaged by interlopers\, then sold back to them under the well-worn veil of diversity hashtags\, the cosmonauts of Metropolarity geared up on a mission to shift the paradigm of their world\, not to change it\, but to right it’s course. \nThis is what happened. This is ERASURE. \nanthony romero: anthonyjoelromero.tumblr.com

SUMMARY:THE LASER LIFE: QUEER SF READING SERIES RETURNS
DESCRIPTION:OUR CHURCH CONGREGATES AGAIN. \nLASER LIFE. A queer sci-fi reading. \nEverything examined is possible. Everything in the universe\, from the widely posted to the under served\, belongs here\, in the forefront of consciousness and being. Every particle\, every node\, every ion that pulses and vibrates throughout the eternal void\, it all has a voice\, is real. \nThere are no mistakes in characterization; there are no budding accidents or effortless imaginations. All things scribed and etched in parchment are the divine edicts of their authors\, influenced by the shifting winds of the zeitgeist of the world the scribe inhabits\, and is informed by the pulse body-mind electric elective mandate. \nDespite the insistence of the dominant paradigm that elects to leave us voiceless\, facing the peripatetic void\, there is still a way. We can still choose our own adventure\, we can still choose our own narrative. We can live life on the narrowest edge of a beam of light. We can live in the crevices of the universe where dark matter subsists\, arcing over singularities where exploding nebulae enmesh with wild-born comets\, streaking through the opaque nothing/everywhere to burst as chroma on a graf tagged wall. We can live life like a laser. \nSo understand: All is real. The choices you make of the creatures you give life to\, all wiry gnarl of angst\, all bulbous and disheveled wad of messy coagulate\, all sinewy stretched meat of universe stuff– they’re all also real and exist here with us in the “real world” forever. Will they strive for their own happiness? Will their own arcs be catapulted into an unfettered birth? Will their joy and pain serve as real\, palpable\, and conscientious? Or will they wither and die\, lay flat on the page as husks\, merely cannon fodder for the oppressing class\, to die a death as a strangled trope loosed of the juiced of life? \nThe LASER LIFE series of readings is designed to expose the quantumly quantative\, psycho-spiritual\, panoramic truth of the speculative\, to make real the shaman’s holler\, the mystic’s clamour\, the soothsayer’s griot-speak– all that was falsely remembered as unreal. Laser Life is a tour beyond the stilted cis-hetero-white-male gaze of normative “science fiction” that plagues the shelves of your local bookstore and Goodreads “to read” lists. It is hoped that Laser Life does not serve as tokenistic or anomalous within the ranks of science fiction\, but that the inclusion of our marginalized voices be viewed as not only empowering\, necessary or revolutionary\, but as intrinsic. \nLaser Life is everything\, and everything in its place: the nook of all that is possible for us to view: the whole of the universe. \nSo now it is up to you to write this way. \nyour guides:\nSHANE JENKINS\n\nRAS MASHRAMANI\n\nRASHEEDAH PHILLIPS\n\nMAGGIE EIGHTEEN\n \nyour guests:\nMAMI WATU\nJOEL NICHOLS\nAZEEM NPC \nya’ll know how we do

SUMMARY:SINGULARITY: THE ONE-PIECE FEST
DESCRIPTION:o N e \nI was talking about time. It’s so hard for me to believe in it. Some things go. Pass on. Some things just stay. I used to think it was my rememory. You know. Some things you forget. Other things you never do. But it’s not. Places\, places are still there. If a house burns down\, it’s gone\, but the place—the picture of it—stays\, and not just in my rememory\, but out there\, in the world. What I remember is a picture floating around out there outside my head. I mean\, even if I don’t think it\, even if I die\, the picture of what I did\, or knew\, or saw is still out there. SUMMARY:Metropolarity at Swarthmore's Queer & Trans Conference
DESCRIPTION:Eyy catch us up at Swarthmore as featured guests of Swarthmore’s Queer and Trans Conference. \n Swarthmore College’s annual Queer and Trans Conference (QTC) is a student-run\, free\, and public conference that explores critical topics of queer and trans thinking\, playing\, working\, organizing\, and living. The planning committee is a group of students committed to radical queer and trans community building and justice. Each year we invite a group of activists\, scholars\, and artists to join queer and trans students\, faculty\, and staff and their friends from Swarthmore College\, nearby schools\, and the greater Philadelphia area for a weekend of learning\, discussion\, and performance around a theme relevant to the histories and lives of our communities. We invite a diverse group of presenters who will help us to re-center queer and trans discourse around voices and perspectives marginalized by mainstream gay rights movements. Our conference spotlights the fabulous work of queer and trans people of color\, people with dis/abilities\, indigenous\, poor\, and (im)migrant people. When possible\, we bring individuals and groups who live and work locally and those who are structurally denied access to resources available to us at Swarthmore. \nIn past years\, conferences and symposiums have explored sexual politics of the bedroom\, boardroom\, and classroom; queer media; queer coalition building; the intersections of race\, religion\, and gender; queer and trans activism; debates around same-sex marriage; and queer families and homes. This year’s conference\, “Resisting Violence\, Building Queer Safety\,” seeks to address and begin conversations about safety in queer and trans communities.

SUMMARY:CHROME CITY 2: No\, New York
DESCRIPTION:a prep and a primer\, re: CHROME CITY. From the Files of Lexcorp.. CC’d Weyland-Yutani\, Cyberdyne Systems\, Ltd.\, Tyrell Corporation\, LLC. \nChrome City in general is an attempt to create new forms of art from the ethereal husks\, the ozone laced residue of the retro-future\, and to stitch new works\, new possibilities from the light lines streaking off time warping deloreans. It’s not just a “retro party”; the intention is to create something new while acknowledging everything that made us who we are.\nChrome City 2: No\, New York\, is both a conscious effort to vibrate away from the stagnancy of relying on Big Brother to validate us (in more ways than one\, this time specifically New York City and it’s relationship to Philly\, as well as in an Orwellian sense–see what i did there?) So\, we’re saying “NO” to New York\, but we’re also bigging up; we can’t front: the pre-Guiliani graffiti scrawl of a gang ridden late ’70s and ’80s NYC is ultimately enticing. Besides\, “No New York” is the name of a seminal no wave compilation that informs much of the underground today. But aside from a raw play on words\, we’re looking to bridge the ever widening gap of the forward movements that took place downtown from 1977 to 1984– go-go boys\, voguers\, bboys\, art fags\, drag queens all clash with the mandroids\, bio-morphs\, replikants and blade runners alike– to the post internet everything world of today. Is it possible to simultaneously dis something and pay homage to it? Pour in those 1.21 gigawatts of ill base\, no wave noise\, and insurrectionist afterfuture cyber speak\, then hop in the delorean and find out. \n1love \nNo bands. \nSWARM\n***emissary work\, elegaic work ship*** \nPINK WASH\n***tachyon tactile technician\, tetrazoid program*** \nXXXTIAN BEAUTY\n***electric riot control\, banjee intellect \, hardwire woke work** \nNo djs. \nNOLITA SELECTOR\nJOHN MORRISON\n***control room plus*** \nPANOPTIC NERVE\n***synesthetic sorcery\, sun sun eye control*** \nNo hosts. \nICON EBONY FIERCE\nALEXOTERIC \nNo guides.\nMETROPOLARITY

At the Philadelphia Convention Center\,  June 4 from 7:30pm – 9:30pm. \nFeatured Performers: poet Cyrée Johnson (ACG ’13)\, sci-fi writer Maggie Eighteen (ACG ’14)\, poet\, Kavindu Ade\, performer Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi\, and writer/activist\, Tyler Vile. Co-curated and Hosted by Annie Mok (LTA ’14\, ACG ’13)\, and J Mase III (ACG ’07). Audience members are invited to bring work to share! \nSpecial thanks to the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference \nCommunity Partners: Apiary Magazine\, awQward\, Gender Reel Lambda Literary\, Metropolarity\, Morris Home\, Thread Makes Blanket\, Trans Oral History Project\, Topside Press\, Trans Masculine Alliance Network\, Trans* Wellness Project\, Trans Women of Color Collective \nCyree Jarelle Johnson is a Black non-binary essayist and poet living and working in Philadelphia\, PA. Their writing considers disability as a cyborg femme reality\, femininity as resistance and rebellion\, and Black pessimism. They are a founding member of A Collective Apparition\, a Black queer and trans interdisciplinary arts collective. Their work has been featured in publications both domestically and internationally including Black Girl Dangerous\, Feministing\, and most recently in the anthology Poems for the Queer Revolution. \nKavindu Ade\nKavindu Ade is a 24 year old Wordsmith\, Jedi\, and Black Boy Extraordinaire. Born in Brooklyn\, NY to Afro-Caribbean immigrants his poetry is a dance between cultures. While best known for his gender identity poem entitled “IT\,” Kavi’s work centers on his navigation of intersecting identities – among those\, the relation of his Blackness to his transcendence of gender. Through his poetry the world unfolds itself into moments of cruelty\, but also beauty\, wonder\, and becoming. Kavi has been performing since 2009 when he made his debut into the spoken word scene at Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam. After two consecutive years competing on the international stage Kavi went on to coach the Philly Youth Poetry Slam Team that competes at BNV. He is also the coach of Temple University’s Slam Team. Kavi has performed at conferences from Vancouver\, Washington to Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, and has had the pleasure of gracing the stage at Grinnell College\, Rutgers University\, Ursinus College\, and Clark University among others. Off stage\, he is probably in his room enjoying a good bowl of cereal\, binge watching detective shows\, or posting his best attempts at immaculate selfies. \nLady Dane Figueroa Edidi\nAn actor\, singer\, dancer and writer she began producing her own cabarets at the age of seventeen and made her New York cabaret Debut at Don’t Tell Mama’s in 2011. After beginning to study the Dances of her Ancestors at Mamasita Studio\, she began combining African\, Latin and Native American rhythms to her shows. Although primarily known for her explosive style of cabaret\, Lady Dane is a passionate actor who has worked at such theaters as the Kennedy Center\, Adventure Theater\, Round House Theater\, Theater for the New City\, Spooky Action Theater\, Arena Stage\, and LaMama in New York in which she originated the role of Madame Cordelia Mcclain. She has also produced a reading of her new musical Roaring\, and premiered a workshop of her one woman show Klytmnestra at SpookyAction Theatre. A Poet\, and advocate for Trans Voices in the arts she became the first Trans Woman of Color in DC published author of a work of fiction\, Yemaya’s Daughters. \nMaggie Eighteen\nA hybrid kid cyborg\, Philadelphia native\, and former girl-object prototype. Eighteen is frustrated/pissed with academic distinction\, white supremacy\, and fixed rather than fluid treatment of language and identity. A co-founder of Metropolarity sci-fi collective\, they enjoy slang/dialects\, brand confusion\, bushido Mars death stuff\, and nuance. When they are not working professionally in critical media literacy and empowerment areas\, they write speculative fiction about bodies/objectification\, intimacy/class\, neighborhood/community\, and the violence in relying on binaries to understand the world. \nTyler Vile \nTyler Vile is a poet\, performer\, and activist from Baltimore\, Maryland whose work has been published in Gadfly\, The Bicycle Review\, and Bluestockings Magazine. She’s done reviews and interviews for Punk Globe Magazine since 2007\, has spotlighted at Sparkle\, DC’s monthly queer open mic series\, and slammed at Capturing Fire\, DC’s annual queer spoken word festival. Her full-length book of poetry\, Never Coming Home\, is forthcoming on Topside Press. \n[FACEBOOK RSVP]

SUMMARY:Metropolarity for New Museum Seminars: (Temporary) Collections of Ideas around SPECULATION
DESCRIPTION:Join Metropolarity on a Sunday afternoon at New York’s NEW MUSEUM for their public seminar series\, this season themed SPECULATION. Metropolarity will be in dialogue with New School scholars/designers/media theorists Ed Keller and Orit Halpern\, addressing speculative realist philosophy and future-oriented speculative thought through fiction and design work. Say what. \nThis focus on sustained research and ideas in development stimulated the establishment of the Seminar series\, in which small groups of multidisciplinary thinkers gather over a three-month period to consider the Education Department’s Seasonal thematic\, with pressing conversations related to art and the expanded art context examined in relation to broader issues in society. Entitled New Museum Seminars: (Temporary) Collections of Ideas\, the series directly references the Museum’s history of “collecting” ideas\, rather than art objects. The goal of the Seminars is to provide a platform for discussing\, debating\, and enacting ideas as they emerge\, in real time\, and to develop scholarship or other forms of joint creative production relating to art’s place in culture. The Seminars utilize some recognizable graduate-level and reading-group pedagogical strategies\, such as syllabi and weekly closed\, peer-led reading sessions\, but are distinguished by their context within the contemporary art museum. In addition to the weekly sessions\, there is institutional support for some form of group production to grow out of the shared course of study (conferences\, performance residencies\, online publications\, Resource Center exhibitions\, etc.). A group of approximately fifteen participants from various backgrounds (including artists\, dancers\, curators\, critics\, educators\, and scholars\, but also those with specialties not directly art-related) constitute each Seminar group\, along with R&D Season artists in residence and New Museum Education Department staff members who work on the topic. Unique among museums\, the Seminar truly functions as a “think tank” within a programming and exhibitionary institution\, fostering new ideas and work between outside and intra-institutional participants (in the past\, New Museum curators\, editors\, researchers\, and educators have also applied). \n

SUMMARY:RITUAL CAUSALITY 001
DESCRIPTION:Black Quantum Futurism presents its first 2-hour gallery performance RITUAL CAUSALITY 001 featuring ancient anthropological finds\, African/Black Diasporic time and memory rituals\, and live sound experiments. Experience BQF theorists discovering the first computer in 100bc\, lecturing on Sun Ra synchronicities\, and Quantum Mapping our collective futures. RITUAL CAUSALITY 001 is a retrocausal retrospective starting with the latest BQF work\, ANTI-KY-THE/RA\, then spiraling backwards to the beginning with the NonLocality series. BQF’s first exhibition of works will be a multimedia experience that will include dance\, sound\, projections and speculative literary performances. \nBlack Quantum Futurism is inspired by afrofuturism\, quantum physics\, and African traditions of spatial-temporal consciousness. BQF weaves speculative reality with ritual\, image and sound to present innovative works that offer practical techniques for escaping time loops\, oppression vortexes\, and the digital matrix. \nBQF Collective is an artistic and literary collaboration between Camae Defstar (Rockers!; MMGZ) and Rasheedah Phillips (The AfroFuturist Affair; Metropolarity) which explores the intersections of futurism\, literature\, art\, sound\, creative media\, DIY-aesthetics\, and activism in marginalized communities. Forming in Summer 2014\, the collective has created a number of community-based events\, experimental music project\, several zines\, and an anthology of experimental essays called “Black Quantum Futurism: Theory & Practice Vol. 1\,” which includes visions from other futurist writers and visionaries. www.blackquantumfuturism.tumblr.com /www.blackquantumfuturism.bandcamp.com \nDay #3 Rockers Bbq Weekend #RBW5\n$7-10 requested donation\nCash bar\nLight refreshments\nZines/books/art for sale \nThis event is apart of Rockers BBQ Weekend #RBW5 A 3 day diy festival based in Philadelphia showcasing marginalized artists and artist that create work that speaks out against injustice. \nDAY #1 – AUGUST 14TH – ATONEMENT / ATUNEMENT – THE ART CHURCH\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1112257575456155/ \nDAY #2 – AUGUST 15TH – ROCKERS – LAVA SPACE\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/410789349104259/
