METROPOLARITY is a DIY sci-fi collective based, bred, and tested in the colliding future-present of Philadelphia. STYLE OF ATTACK Report contains select work from Metropolarity’s four founding members, who contribute theory, practice, and experience of home grown speculative visioning for both historical documentation as well as personal and collective survival. The collection serves as a model and a record of how Black, brown, queer, low-resource, working, ill and in-recovery people can project themselves into the future, conjuring resources, technology, and magic that aid us in the present.

Also this sci-fi is FIRE cuz the crew don’t play.

Laser Life is a queer sci-fi reading documenting the release of STYLE OF ATTACK and a celebration of the book being nominated for a Lambda Literary Award, the highest honor in LGBT letters.

OUR CHURCH

The LASER LIFE series of readings is designed to expose the quantumly quantative, psycho-spiritual, panoramic truth of the speculative, to make real the shaman’s holler, the mystic’s clamour, the soothsayer’s griot-speak– all that was falsely remembered as unreal. Laser Life is a tour beyond the stilted cis-hetero-white-male gaze of normative “science fiction” that plagues the shelves of your local bookstore and Goodreads “to read” lists. It is hoped that Laser Life does not serve as tokenistic or anomalous within the ranks of science fiction, but that the inclusion of our marginalized voices be viewed as not only empowering, necessary or revolutionary, but as intrinsic.

Laser Life is everything, and everything in its place: the nook of all that is possible for us to view: the whole of the universe.

OUR CHURCH CONGREGATES AGAIN.

LASER LIFE. A queer sci-fi reading.

Everything examined is possible. Everything in the universe, from the widely posted to the under served, belongs here, in the forefront of consciousness and being. Every particle, every node, every ion that pulses and vibrates throughout the eternal void, it all has a voice, is real.

There are no mistakes in characterization; there are no budding accidents or effortless imaginations. All things scribed and etched in parchment are the divine edicts of their authors, influenced by the shifting winds of the zeitgeist of the world the scribe inhabits, and is informed by the pulse body-mind electric elective mandate.

Despite the insistence of the dominant paradigm that elects to leave us voiceless, facing the peripatetic void, there is still a way. We can still choose our own adventure, we can still choose our own narrative. We can live life on the narrowest edge of a beam of light. We can live in the crevices of the universe where dark matter subsists, arcing over singularities where exploding nebulae enmesh with wild-born comets, streaking through the opaque nothing/everywhere to burst as chroma on a graf tagged wall. We can live life like a laser.

So understand: All is real. The choices you make of the creatures you give life to, all wiry gnarl of angst, all bulbous and disheveled wad of messy coagulate, all sinewy stretched meat of universe stuff– they’re all also real and exist here with us in the “real world” forever. Will they strive for their own happiness? Will their own arcs be catapulted into an unfettered birth? Will their joy and pain serve as real, palpable, and conscientious? Or will they wither and die, lay flat on the page as husks, merely cannon fodder for the oppressing class, to die a death as a strangled trope loosed of the juiced of life?

The LASER LIFE series of readings is designed to expose the quantumly quantative, psycho-spiritual, panoramic truth of the speculative, to make real the shaman’s holler, the mystic’s clamour, the soothsayer’s griot-speak– all that was falsely remembered as unreal. Laser Life is a tour beyond the stilted cis-hetero-white-male gaze of normative “science fiction” that plagues the shelves of your local bookstore and Goodreads “to read” lists. LASER LIFE

they shredded their anti-manifestos and their futurist-hate manuals and their tracts and lit them on fire. the ash rained down for days and days; the edicts spewed against them were heavy and voluminous. but they soon celebrated on the salt-like dust of their detractors words, stomping a mad ritual with leaden, though tattered, boot, soon returning speckling confetti of the Grand Nayser back to the earth.

they hooked up wires to their souls and downloaded spirits, uploaded ancient lwa, and disc-burned orishas into their retinas. “scan this”, they told them in their jack-boot and hazmat suits. they watched the thing of it all become the dance, the word become the deed, and launched themselves, defiantly, into deepest, darkest void, into space itself, piloting a starship through time.

their life was lived in laser

SWARM
To fellow queer super-heroes, wanderers, listeners: when they danced, i held up my fist to attract lightning i was an antennae for god, just there, present. i couldn’t hear drums and voices, i made no notes in my moleskine, i didn’t strain for lyrics or “meaning”. I just was. There was just soul opening, movement, rage, honor, and meditation; my heart was a queer spire and every “-ism” and “-phobia” fell away, I was.

THE DAQUAN
Alien alert! Sci-Fi seamstress, weaving wild tales channeled from the divine ether, this wordsmith speaks to cosmic minutiae populating the other’d dimensions with pure verbal acrobatics over futurist beats ringing clear like breakbeats pounded out on Cybotronian lunch tables.

MOOR MOTHER GODDESS
What is EDM to the mother of Moors? What is a punk rocker to one who casts spells? A mere beat-maker to a shaman? Then an emcee to a Goddess? The good in all these things, the fire and the noise

GOODNIGHT STARS GOODNIGHT AIR
Like fireflies rising through cracks in cement, a tree birthed in ruins of a long forgotten warehouse, GSGA gives us blissed out drone pop, from pennsylvania’s industrial north.

EX BY V
Roiling chaotic drums, lascivious bass, strange experiments and, above all, complete frenzy, collude to bring us this meddlesome twosome. Wild, focused and free

MARLO REYNOLDS
Blue flame. When you see the blue flame, meditate on the blue flame. A fool in your life acting up? Blue flame: fool is gone.

SEE THROUGH GIRLS
Some how, after days of bashing and wailing, through a maze of broken string and apoplectic tantrum, this amalgam of pre-calculus homework, dizzy punk and robot rebellion is finally punk and ready to tear off heads.

TRIANGULLUM
sound, digital collage/video, textile, object design for a new future, diasporan design, and speculative fashion to create a container for mind-transformation, subversive de-colonization, and ancestry communication.

SHANE JENKINS
The anthropomorphic sprite of a 100,000 words of light, unveiling a sonic journey through the afterfuture.

DJ AURA
Kinetic Kemetic sound blender, the rare dj who’s mixes are as meticulous as they are boundary pushing, as tight as they are genre bending, and as freaking nasty/fun as they are curated!

For 100 years, LASER LIFE has provided the denizens of the hollowed out, Siberian dystopic husk formerly known as West Philly, with the one and secret voice. Fashioning antennaes from bones of dead CEOs and the rotting the planks of the Comcast building onto abandoned warehouses and hipster enclaves, it’s ever revolving cast of miscreants and saboteurs have been broadcasting the last zombie drenched signal of hope out into the universe. They are all just the strange fags and three-eyed queers caught stealing fruit and guns at the intergalactic bazaar, stowing away on the Millennium Falcon, and photo-bombing the white washed sardonic landscapes of even the most triumphant Capt. Kirks in victory pose. We’ve found them. This is their Santeria, this is their church.

LASER LIFE

west philly’s own urban cosmic enchantress, Subways weaves the cityscape– all burnt out husk and Orwellian encroachment– into shifting beautiful literary orbs

When [R. Phillips] was done reading at LASER LIFE last night, I understood something so wholly, and completely, so finally, that can never not be true. That, beyond the colloquial euphemism of what Laser Life, sci-fi, and the speculative mean to me, that to say that one is “living sci-fi”, is for me inevitably and completely true. Her story and it’s heart rending, “gone to glory” climax made me realize that it is not only possible to live science fiction, but for me, it’s mandatory. It’s all there is, it’s all I know. Thanks, Rasheedah, for validating, confirming, making me believe.

If you are sad you missed this momentous and life-affirming gathering, it might behoove you to stay abreast of our events via our Facebook page.

We’re very busy this October and November. . .

We realized that we should attempt to broadcast this past Laser Life (26 APR 2013), queer empowered sci-fi reading series, via Google Hangout, which permits audio and video chat in the nostalgic format of a chatroom. But on top of that, we soon discovered the frightening option to turn that Hangout into a live YouTube stream. Eighteen tested out the possibilities and the following was produced and posted to their YouTube channel in a matter of moments the evening prior:

So that when it was time for Friday night’s delights to occur, we were successfully live…

The lineup is as follows:
Alex Smith (Laser Life founder) opens.
R. Phillips of the Afrofuturist Affair at 8:21
Shane Jenkins at 19:50
Maggie Eighteen at 32:18
Alex Smith’s A R K D U S T intro & closing piece at 50:00

laser life is a queer sci-fi reading series. this april 26th, 2013.

THE ACTUATOR, THE NEXUS. ALEX SMITH’S LASER LIFE QUEER SCI-FI READING SERIES MAKES ITS SPRING RETURN.

featuring:

special guest: POLYMER MONOCHROME, aka Paul Walker of SGNLS in his sci-fi reading debut!! We are ecstatic to hear this new/old voice.

Alex Smith/ARKDUST:
“Close your eyes little starry Captain, little man of cosmos, you’re almost there, becoming. A lotus flower will appear at the crest of your every step, through cracks in the dust and piss strewn sidewalks and in the mire of the still damp tarmac leading to the place you call home. Light this stick, it’s a candle, and yes, though it’s just a figment or a symbol of your dreams, it’s something you can hold on to, it’s something you can use to see in the dark. Can you see it? Behind the flame? On another plane, a figure, spiraling coming closer to and standing grand in space and lacking light? Is it sentient? Is it you?”

Maggie Eighteen/ALL THAT’S LEFT
“Not soon after they became immersed in the virtual place between both their connections, the in-between place where they released tension, the wi-fuck, they called it. Where his female-bodied Captain had parts from a male one, and he, so used to being the aggressive masculine archetype in person, was on his hands and knees, willingly at the mercy of whatever humiliation or obedient bark she could dish out. She would work him mercilessly. The world was scary, and tonight he wanted to cry. ”

Shane Jenkins/RAZED BY WOLVES
“And then the moon was blotted out. Hundreds of crows, maybe thousands, swirled up over the forest, cawing and shrieking. The noise was deafening, the sky a whirr of angry feathers. All at once, they descended upon Kevin. He struggled, but the griffin’s wings kept him from moving. The crows picked away at Kevin bit by bit, and flew away with small parts of him. A bit of skin here, an eyeball there, a piece of tongue. In three minutes, there was no trace of Kevin, as they even flew away with his bones.”

Ras Mashramani/THE NIGHT SPACE
“”Honey, it would be good for you,” her mother squeezes her shoulder–the first time in months, “It would help us all out. Then you can get back to being you, a good girl.”
While Melinda throws all of her hoodies and sweats into a duffel bag, she wonders what that makes her now, after she was taken. She checks her Facebook one last time, and browses YouTube. Absentmindedly, she googles her name. She googles Kensington 6. She googles abductions and inseminations. In one youtube video, there is a girl from the Midwest bragging about her insemination, spitting at the webcam. Melinda thinks, then, that it’s time to go to bed.”

R. Phillips/AFRO-FUTURIST AFFAIR
By day, R. Phillips is a public interest attorney at a nonprofit legal organization, assisting low-income members of the community. Against the backdrop of night, Phillips explores the fine line between fiction and reality, xperiments with time order, reverses cause & effect, turns black holes inside out to create worlds, and rearranges the cosmos to foster favorable astrological conditions for her alternate selves. She is the mother to her teen, Iyonna, and the creator of The AfroFuturist Affair, a community for Philadelphia Afrofuturists. She plans to release an experimental novel called Recurrence Plot in late 2012/early 2013, should we survive the turning of the Mayan calendar. The Sent(A)Mental Project is a memorial to queer and trans* suicides. It hopes to bring visibility to mental health issues and much-needed attention to the thousands of people lost within our communities, as well as share survivor stories through a variety of artistic expressions. Members of the Laser Life queer SF collective were invited to perform at a S(A)M benefit show on 24 May 2012, along with an small array of other artists. Rather than read individual stories, the Laser Life crew decided to collaborate on a three-piece tale, woven together with a common universe but written in each person’s respective style. Below are the live recordings from the event:

The Weeping Cabin: A Benefit Compilation is a collection of live, exclusive tracks from performers featured at the Sent(A)Mental Benefit Show at Geppetta’s Studio, May 24th 2012. The compilation features downloadable tracks from Emily Bate, Shomi Noise, and Liz & the Lost Boys plus sci-fi spoken word from Laser Life and an excerpt from a performance by a stick and a stone* with full album download. The compilation is an eclectic mixture of voices and styles ranging from indie rock to haunting folk, riot grrl to dystopian science fiction. So very swoon worthy.

Initial proceeds will go to production costs for ‘There Was a Cabin Who Once Wept‘, a short film in-the-works, with additional proceeds benefiting the Sent(A)Mental Project: an artistic memorial to LGBTQ suicides. The film project will be a submission to S(A)M.
“There Was A Cabin That Once Wept” is made possible by a Lee Foundation Art and Change Grant.
